Prof. Dinesh Bhugra CBE
Professor Emeritus of Mental Health & Cultural Diversity
Dinesh Bhugra CBE is Professor Emeritus of Mental Health and Cultural Diversity at Kings College London. He is an honorary consultant psychiatrist at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, and is former president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
He was the first ever UK-based psychiatrist to be voted president of the World Psychiatric Association. He then served as president of the British Medical Association. in 2012 Dr. Bhugra was awarded his CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for services to psychiatry.
Dr. Bhugra is a well-known commentator on mental health issues. He has contributed to The Guardian The Daily Telegraph, The Times (UK), the Financial Times, The Observer, The Huffington Post, the BBC News Magazine, The Times of India and The New York Times.
He is the editor of the International Journal of Social Psychiatry and the International Review of Psychiatry. He has published widely in the field of cultural psychiatry, sexual dysfunction and service development. He has authored/co-authored over 500 scientific papers, chapters, and editorials, in addition to 40 books. Several of his books have won awards and gone into multiple editions. Three of his books have been translated into Mandarin and Japanese. His Oxford Textbook for Public Mental Health won the Book of the Year award last year, and his Practical Cultural Psychiatry was highly recommended.
Dr. Bhugra has also received honours from the American Psychiatry Association, the American College of Psychiatrists, the Academy of Medical Sciences (Singapore), the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, the Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists and the International Medical Sciences Academy.
Dr. Bhugra has attained the following degrees: MA, MSc, MBBS, DSc (Hon), PhD, FRCP, FRCPE, FRCPsych, FFPHM, FRCPsych (Hon), FHKCPsych (Hon), FACPsych (Hon), FAMS (Singapore), FKCL, MPhil, LMSSA, FAcadME, FRSA, DIFAPA Dr. Bhugra sits on the boards of SANE and the Psychiatric Research Trust charities. He is a Distinguished Friend of Migration Museum. He chaired DocHealth charity which is jointly funded by the BMA and the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund from 2018 to 2021, and is currently Non-Executive Director of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
